This is a generational failure. Your parents left you with the world's most technologicaly advanced for the era, power and transportation grid known to man. And 50 years later we are still stuck with it. We knew 30 years ago we had to reup our infrastructure and rather than doing this for future generations you and your generation selfishly profit took and steadfastly refused to reinvest in your own children and grandchildrens future. Moreover you refused to even acknowledge that there was a problem. Every system has two sets of rules: The rules as they are intended or commonly perceived, and the actual rules ("reality"). In most complex systems, the gap between these two sets of rules is huge.

Sometimes we catch a glimpse of the truth, and discover the actual rules of a system. Once the actual rules are known, it may be possible to perform "miracles" -- things which violate the perceived rules.

Hacking is most commonly associated with computers, and people who break into or otherwise subvert computer systems are often called hackers. Although this terminology is occasionally disputed, I think it is essentially correct -- these hackers are discovering the actual rules of the computer systems (e.g. buffer overflows), and using them to circumvent the intended rules of the system (typically access controls). The same is true of the hackers who break DRM or other systems of control.

Writing clever (or sometimes ugly) code is also described as hacking. In this case the hacker is violating the rules of how we expect software to be written. If there's a project that should take months to write, and someone manages to hack it out in a single evening, that's a small miracle, and a major hack. If the result is simple and beautiful because the hacker discovered a better solution, we may describe the hack as "elegant" or "brilliant". If the result is complex and hard to understand (perhaps it violates many layers of abstraction), then we will call it an "ugly hack". Ugly hacks aren't all bad though -- one of my favorite personal hacks was some messy code that demonstrated what would become AdSense (story here), and although the code was quickly discarded, it did it's job.

Hacking isn't limited to computers though. Wherever there are systems, there is the potential for hacking, and there are systems everywhere. Our entire reality is systems of systems, all the way down. This includes human relations (see The Game for an very amusing story of people hacking human attraction), health (Seth Roberts has some interesting ideas), sports (Tim Ferriss claims to have hacked the National Chinese Kickboxing championship), and finance ("too big to fail").

We're often told that there are no shortcuts to success -- that it's all a matter of hard work and doing what we're told. The hacking mindset takes there opposite approach: There are always shortcuts and loopholes. For this reason, hacking is sometimes perceived as cheating, or unfair, and it can be. Using social hacks to steal billions of dollars is wrong (see Madoff). On the other hand, automation seems like a great hack -- getting machines to do our work enabled a much higher standard of living, though as always, not everyone sees it that way (the Luddites

Important new businesses are usually some kind of hack. The established businesses think they understand the system and have setup rules to guard their profits and prevent real competition. New businesses must find a gap in the rules -- something that the established powers either don't see, or don't perceive as important. That was certainly the case with Google: the existing search engines (which thought of themselves as portals) believed that search quality wasn't very important (regular people can't tell the difference), and that search wasn't very valuable anyway, since it sends people away from your site. Google's success came in large part from recognizing that others were wrong on both points.

In fact, the entire process of building a business and having other people and computers do the work for you is a big hack. Nobody ever created a billion dollars through direct physical labor -- it requires some major shortcuts to create that much wealth, and by definition those shortcuts were mostly invisible to others (though many will dispute it after the fact). Startup investing takes this hack to the next level by having other people do the work of building the business, though finding the right people and businesses is not easy.

Not everyone has the hacker mindset (society requires a variety of personalities), but wherever and whenever there were people, there was someone staring into the system, searching for the truth. Some of those people were content to simply find a truth, but others used their discoveries to hack the system, to transform the world. These are the people that created the governments, businesses, religions, and other machines that operate our society, and they necessarily did it by hacking the prior systems. (consider the challenge of establishing a successful new government or religion -- the incumbents won't give up easily)

To discover great hacks, we must always be searching for the true nature of our reality, while acknowledging that we do not currently possess the truth, and never will. Hacking is much bigger and more important than clever bits of code in a computer -- it's how we create the future.

Or at least that's how I see it. Maybe I'll change my mind later.

Select the "Under the Hood" tab

This option will prevent all third-party cookies, including the DoubleClick cookie and other advertising cookies, from being sent back to their corresponding third-party websites. As a consequence, the DoubleClick cookie is never sent to Google, which effectively is the same as setting the opt-out cookie.

Instructions for Safari

While we don't yet have a Safari version of the Google advertising cookie opt-out plugin, Safari is set by default to block all third-party cookies. If you have not changed those settings, this option effectively accomplishes the same thing as setting the opt-out cookie. To confirm that Safari is set up to block third-party cookies, do the following:

From Safari, select "Safari" in the menu bar, and then select "Preferences"

In the Preferences Dialog Box, select the "Security" tab

Make sure the "Accept cookies:" setting is set to "Only from sites you navigate to". You can also set this option to "Never", but this will prevent many web sites that rely on cookies from working.

Instructions for other browsers

Unfortunately, the plugin is not available for other browsers. You can always opt out using the Ads Preferences Manager, but without a special browser plugin, your opt-out setting will go away when you delete your browser's cookies (you would need to set it again manually).

If you're using another browser that's not mentioned above, you can look for a common feature, which accomplishes the same as setting the DoubleClick opt-out cookie: Find a setting in your browser's settings that allows you to only accept cookies from sites you visit, or only "first-party cookies". This option may also be described as "blocking third-party cookies."

Le rivoluzioni tecnologiche, ancora una volta, devono fare i conti coi vincoli fisiologici e culturali del Sapiens, tracciati in milioni di anni di evoluzione.

Adults need at least 250 minutes per week -- equal to 50 minutes of exercise five days a week -- to lose significant weight, according to the latest recommendations from the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

“In the midst of a genuine crisis in Americans’ health related to what we eat and how little we move, these guidelines are meant to provide an understanding and clarification of the role of physical activity and its relationship to weight,” Joseph E. Donnelly, chairman of the writing committee, says in a written statement. “Now that we have the latest information on how much physical activity is part of the equation, we can continue the educational process to help people who struggle with their weight.”

If you are trying to maintain your weight rather than lose, you may still be OK with the 30-minute workouts. The ACSM recommends that adults participate in at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity to prevent significant weight gain. Overweight and obese adults, however, are more likely to reach their goals with at least 250 minutes. The report also recommends strength training as part of the exercise regimen, in order to increase fat-free mass and further reduce health risks.

The recommendations are published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. They are in line with the recent recommendations published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Weight management is an important public health issue, the report says. More than 66% of U.S. adults are either overweight or obese. People can reduce their risk for chronic diseases with as little as a 2% to 3% reduction in excess body weight.

Researchers from Japan’s ATR Computational Neuroscience Laboratories have developed new brain analysis technology that can reconstruct the images inside a person’s mind and display them on a computer monitor, it was announced on December 11. According to the researchers, further development of the technology may soon make it possible to view other people’s dreams while they sleep.

The scientists were able to reconstruct various images viewed by a person by analyzing changes in their cerebral blood flow. Using a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) machine, the researchers first mapped the blood flow changes that occurred in the cerebral visual cortex as subjects viewed various images held in front of their eyes. Subjects were shown 400 random 10 x 10 pixel black-and-white images for a period of 12 seconds each. While the fMRI machine monitored the changes in brain activity, a computer crunched the data and learned to associate the various changes in brain activity with the different image designs.

Then, when the test subjects were shown a completely new set of images, such as the letters N-E-U-R-O-N, the system was able to reconstruct and display what the test subjects were viewing based solely on their brain activity.

For now, the system is only able to reproduce simple black-and-white images. But Dr. Kang Cheng, a researcher from the RIKEN Brain Science Institute, suggests that improving the measurement accuracy will make it possible to reproduce images in color.

“These results are a breakthrough in terms of understanding brain activity,” says Dr. Cheng. “In as little as 10 years, advances in this field of research may make it possible to read a person’s thoughts with some degree of accuracy.”

The researchers suggest a future version of this technology could be applied in the fields of art and design — particularly if it becomes possible to quickly and accurately access images existing inside an artist’s head. The technology might also lead to new treatments for conditions such as psychiatric disorders involving hallucinations, by providing doctors a direct window into the mind of the patient.

ATR chief researcher Yukiyasu Kamitani says, “This technology can also be applied to senses other than vision. In the future, it may also become possible to read feelings and complicated emotional states.”

The research results appear in the December 11 issue of US science journal Neuron.

“Chi sotto queste feste se ne sta ben riparato, come me a casa coi miei, tra le colline dove la neve ha attutito ogni cosa, beato di aver salvato dalla gelata i limoni, non è forse adatto a internet. Anche perché a Natale la terra quasi ci respira dentro e ci rende volentieri in grado di bastarci, ma intimi agli altri, più calmi. E invece internet, e ì in particolare quegli orrori che si chiamano blog, sono tutto l’opposto. Un nervosismo di insulti svogliati, sfoghi di invidia o meschinità di cui si è felici: luoghi precari insomma, dove la coscienza e l’essere desti sono sospesi. Il vivere così fuori mano e isolato peraltro mi costringe a usare internet per lavorare, e spedire articoli come questo. E il non avere neppure la tv in casa, e il giornalaio a troppi chilometri di distanza, rende pure inevitabile usare il computer per leggere le notizie. E fin lì niente di male. Può forse biasimarsi la loro stringatezza, e la luce del video che non vale la carta sfogliata. Ma un qualche vantaggio c’è. Dove invece si sente solo disagio, e un dolore ulteriore per come sta finendo il mondo, è scorrendo i vari blog. Essi vengono vantati come luoghi d’espressione ideale e comunicazione: nessun elogio insomma gli è risparmiato. A me invece paiono luoghi di frustrazione e sciatteria, nei quali bisognerebbe io credo vergognarsi di scrivere, e certo non inorgoglirsi di averli creati. Invece c’è tutto un culturame e persino il senso comune a elogiarli, a vedere in essi una forma superiore di informazione e democrazia. Ma quelli che valgono qualcosa sono pochi siti a pagamento nei quali si limitano o si cooptano i partecipanti. Gli altri, la maggioranza, invece amplificano solo dei luoghi comuni e non erudiscono in alcun modo. Infatti chi abbia un qualunque mestiere e lo sappia davvero lo vede subito: sui blog si parla di tutto, ma sapendo ben poco, e informando ancor meno. Il loro fine è in effetti un altro: assecondare qualche frasetta, alla quale l’insulto serve da sfogo e surroga svogliatamente pensieri assenti. E peggio ancora: si sente in questo mai firmarsi col suo vero nome di chi invia messaggi una caduta ulteriore. Sia chi sia, impiegato o signora snob, arrabbiati di destra o sinistra, studenti o professorini: tutti costoro scrivono al riparo dell’anonimato cose che mai si direbbero in faccia. Altra diseducazione.
Internet diseduca anzitutto perché solo una persona ch’è già molto colta è in grado di orientarsi nella sua infinità di voci, ma allora non ne ha bisogno. Inoltre peggiora le cose anche perché confonde la parola comunità con un’accozzaglia di insulti, e approssimazioni dette senza responsabilità. Come in certa pessima tv viene pertanto meno il contraddittorio, in cui si disputi con durezza ma con onore: prevale il frastuono. La qual cosa anzi a ben pensarci è più esecrabile pure che in televisione. Perché rende tutto pervadenti, e a disposizione della presunzione di ognuno, l’ignoranza e l’insulto. Insomma il blog non è da persone serie: è un frastuono, che si è assecondato per moda, ma che con la democrazia e l’opinione vera non c’entra. Altro che forma di spontanea resistenza originale: è incolta, svogliata e vile, e soprattutto fatta di ovvietà i cui difetti palesi persino alle povere anime che vi dibattono tra loro, sono colmate dagli insulti.

In conclusione mai come in questi anni si comunica, e però senza dire niente o peggio dicendo quando sarebbe meglio tacere. Il che vale anche per i blog e internet. Ed è bene che s’inizi a dirlo. Tanto più in queste feste di Natale quando i difetti di intimità, verità stonano più che mai.”

Seguire la luce in ogni caso è un atto da fotografi (penso al primo grande flash (Sia la luce! E luce fu. Dio vide che la luce era cosa buona, e separò la luce dalle tenebre). La luce che si stacca dal buio e si veste sulle cose. La luce che si riflette e mescola le cose.

La luce che è conoscenza e nella fotografia diventa ricordo. Per quanto sia breve il tempo di scatto, non è mai nullo: la fotografia è un integrale. Oltre alla sua bidimensionalità, ha uno spessore più o meno consistente, il tempo dell'otturatore. Uno strato in cui si accumula poco a poco la polvere del ricordo (altri motivi per sospettare che la fotografia non sia realismo, posto che realismo, come parola abbia davvero un significato).

E nella polvere del ricordo, moto bronwniano che si rivela alla luce, ordiniamo la luce inseguita, in sequenze temporalmente arbitrarie (a volte poche ore dopo, a volte dopo mesi, così come nel flusso dei pensieri disordinatamente emergono i ricordi)

Vi auguro di sorridere ripercorrendo il vostro stream 2008 all'indietro, scatto dopo scatto. Vi auguro di continuare a pedinare le vostre luci nel 2009, integrando con l'otturatore quello che vi trovate davanti agli occhi, e che qualcosa della luce vi si rifletta dentro, a illuminare per ciascuna e per ciascuno ciò che desiderate vedere (indipendentemente dalle fotografia, anche, sì).

Un’avanzata alla Attila dove è assai difficile trovare spunti critici, dimenticando o ignorando quanto sottolineano da tempo diversi analisti-utenti, dai “walled garden” allo sfruttamento dell’user-generated content alla mancanza pressoché assoluta di privacy (in questa pagina ulteriori dettagli e link, pur se non aggiornatissimi). Ma non era l’altro ieri che si osannava parimenti Second Life? Dove bisogna ci fossero a tutti i costi banche e agenzie immobiliari, cani e porci. In un batter d’occhio quel nome è scomparso dalle cronache italiche online, almeno da quelle che contano. E non era già successo lo stesso con twitter e compagnia bella, passando per MySpace, ovvio? E quando si diceva in giro che se non avevi un blog, azienda o individuo, non eri nessuno ma proprio nessuno? E quando tanta gente correva a mettere email e sito web sul proprio bigliettino da visita, pur se non erano attivi o non sapevano usarli? Un po’ di memoria storica non guasta certo, anche perché si tratta di pochi anni, o anche mesi talvolta. Eppure la moda non demorde, i media spingono, gli specchietti abbagliano e tutti o quasi ci cascano, una volta dopo l’altra dopo l’altra.

Se è innegabile che tali strumenti facilitino le comunicazioni “across the globe”, è decisamente eccessivo bersi la favoletta che Facebook connetta veramente la gente. Assai utile ricordare al riguardo una puntigliosa inchiesta apparsa sul londinese Guardian a gennaio, dove si ribadiva tra l’altro: “…it is a social experiment, an expression of a particular kind of neoconservative libertarianism”, mentre per gli inserzionisti “with Facebook Ads, our brands can become a part of the way users communicate and interact on Facebook,” senza dimenticare che tra i suoi finanziatori ci sono potenti “neocon activists” legati addirittura alla CIA. Pur se non tutti vogliono aderire a simili posizioni, per quanto documentate, è indubbio che troppi entusiasti high-tech cadono in una ridicola auto-referenzialità senza fine. Esaltando gli strumenti senza creare cultura. Valutando il semplice link e una parolina azzeccata come forma privilegiata di comunicazione (comunicazione?).

Analogo atteggiamento va rivelando, sempre in questi giorni, il tam-tam online sul prossimo lancio di Wired Italia. Iniziativa di per sé encomiabile, visto, appunto, l’andazzo cultural-digitale italiano nostrano. Solo che questo scorrere ad nauseam di report, incontri, foto e volti, battute, più o meno identici, rivela l’ennesima falla. Il marketing virale non paga quando viene sparato a getto continuo su blog, siti sociali o IM, e se proprio si vuole approffitare del virus della Rete, be’ allora basta gettare qualche seme e lasciarlo operare da solo, senza forzature che sfociano prima o poi nel classico effetto-boomerang - o, peggio, nella grande moda del giorno poi dimenticata quello successivo, di cui sopra.

Tutte quest’entusiamo pompato e artificiale danneggia la cyber-comunicazione tra individui e il senso stesso di Internet. Domani, tra qualche ora, quale sarà la prossima ondata-gadget-mania di cui non potremo fare a meno? In ogni caso non ne abbiamo e non ne avremo bisogno. Soprattutto se puntiamo davvero a contribuire a un mondo migliore, meno caotico e chiuso, più aperto e godibile per tutti. Dove appena un miliardo di persone ha accesso alle tecnologie digitali, sugli oltre sei miliardi che popolano il pianeta Terra, e con la forbice sociale in crescita ovunque, ben oltre il digital divide. E dove gli strumenti digitali disponibili, già oggi sovrabbondanti, vanno ancorati al concreto e ai contenuti (ottimo esempio, anche se ripetuto qui, è il circuito di Global Voices). Altrimenti creeremo di fatto l’antitesi del social networking online, facendone al contempo l’apologia. Nativi o immigrati digitali, non ci resta che rimanere con i piedi ben piantati per terra - pur avendo la testa in mezzo al cielo.

Un’altro aspetto di Facebook su cui bisognerebbe riflettere sono le condizioni d’uso, io me le sono lette e ne e’ venuto fuori un articolo:
